Red Sox bullpen issues continue in loss to Rays

It wasn’t the end of the Red Sox’ seven-game road trip that they had hoped for as they fell to the Rays 4-3 Thursday night in Tampa. Overall, the Red Sox won five of seven on the trip and were able to extend their AL East lead to 8.5 games over the Rays.

The eighth inning woes continued for the Red Sox as Wil Myers’ double plated Evan Longoria, proving to be the game-winning run. The run was charged to Rubby De La Rosa who suffered his first major league loss. Other than De La Rosa, the Red Sox got a combined 1 2/3 scoreless innings from Drake Britton and Matt Thornton out of the ‘pen. Starter Jake Peavy wasn’t his best, allowing a season-high five walks, but he still kept the Red Sox in the game allowing three runs on four hits over six innings.

The Red Sox offense was led by David Ortiz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who each hit solo homers in the loss. Stephen Drew added the other run producing hit, a double in the sixth inning, which tied the game at three at the time. Drew’s two hits led the Red Sox’ six-hit attack.

Boston will return home for nine straight games beginning Friday night (7:10, NESN) when they take on the Yankees where John Lackey will go up against Hiroki Kuroda.

What they’ll be saying: The bullpen before Koji Uehara is becoming to become major flaw as the regular season comes to a close. They cannot find someone they can consistently depend on as Thursday it was De La Rosa allowing a run, after Brandon Workman allowed two runs over two innings of relief on Wednesday … There was a bit of a scare when Peavy took a broken bat off the wrist in the sixth inning. He finished the inning and got precautionary X-Rays following the game which came back negative. Luckily, if he were to miss a start, the Sox are in a good position for him to do so with as many off days as they have in the month of September.
