Red Sox get to Sabathia early, Lester continues dominance in Sox win over Yankees

BOSTON — Despite his 2-1 record in four starts against the Red Sox this season, Yankees starter CC Sabathia hasn’t pitched particularly well, as he’s amassed a 7.15 ERA over those four starts. The Red Sox continued their success against Sabathia and got a solid performance from their ace Jon Lester in the Sox’ 5-1 win Saturday afternoon over the Yankees at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox offense scored in four straight innings, the second through the fifth, totaling five runs off Sabathia and rolled to a convincing win. Five different players recorded RBIs, while Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli and Jonny Gomes each had two hits in the win. Napoli also scored two runs and reached base in all four of his plate appearances, the same being said for Gomes.

“CC is a very good pitcher, he’s had a tremendous career and we’ve had some success against him this year particularly at Fenway, whether it’s the wall, whether it’s just confidence going against him,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said. “We have gone up against two very good starting pitchers in this series so far, but our right-handed hitters have a pretty good idea of what [CC] is going to offer them and when you see David [Ortiz] start to hit the ball to the opposite field like he has, that’s a huge difference in the middle of the lineup.”

Lester continued to show why he likely will be the Sox’ Game 1 starter as the left-hander went eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five and walking two. He closed the game out strong retiring nine of the last 10 hitters he faced. Franklin Morales pitched the ninth inning to finish off the win.

The series will conclude tomorrow night (8:05, ESPN) where Clay Buchholz will be opposed by Ivan Nova.

What they’ll be saying: It was a milestone day for Lester has he has now surpassed the 200 inning mark for the fifth time in his career, and is the ninth Red Sox pitcher in team history to do so. He has a quality start in all eight of his outings since Aug. 8 and has posted a 1.86 ERA over that span. Since the All-Star break he’s been a different pitcher as he owns a 2.52 ERA in the second half with quality starts in 11 of 12 outings … Napoli continues his dominance in the month of September as since Aug. 31 he’s reached safely in 27 of 48 plate appearances for a .563 on-base percentage … With the win the Red Sox’ magic number to clinch the AL East is down to six, with the Rays playing Saturday night against the Twins.
