Mets expect David Wright to return on Friday

It won’t mean much in the standings, but the Mets will get their best player back on Friday if all goes according to plan.

David Wright, who hasn’t played since Aug. 2 with a strained right hamstring, is expected to come off the DL on Friday. He will go through a workout on Thursday and if he passes with no problems he will rejoin the team for a series in Philadelphia.

“When you start making predictions and they don’t come to fruition, then all of a sudden it’s viewed as a setback, and that’s not the case,” Wright told reporters Thursday. “I’m not ready to make any predictions or anything. We’ll see how I feel today and then we’ll discuss what tomorrow holds.”

The Mets have just 10 games remaining after Thursday’s game with the Giants. They are 68-83 and in fourth place in the NL East.

Wright was having a tremendous season when he hurt himself against the Royals. In fact, he’d hit a home run in the game he was injured. He’s batting .309 with a .391 on-base percentage, 16 homers, 54 RBIs and 60 runs scored.

Even though the return will mean little in the grand scheme of things, Wright said he felt it was important to play if he was able to.

“If I’m able to play, I want to play,” Wright told reporters. “I don’t understand somebody that’s healthy, that can play, that doesn’t play.”
