Rex Ryan won’t admit whether Jets tipped referees to ‘push’ penalty

Jets head coach Rex Ryan wants you to know he and the coaching staff watch every play of every opponents’ game tape. He just won’t tell you if he let Sunday’s officials in on the information he learned.

Not long after a controversial penalty moved the Jets 15 yards closer to set up the game-winning kick, reports indicated Ryan had warned the referees to be on the look out for the new rule.

“Let’s just put it this way — we watch every single play,” Ryan said. “I don’t care if it’s Week 16 or whatever. We’re going to watch every play of the opponent. That’s what we do as coaches.”

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick admitted yesterday his team had broke the rule — something he fought Sunday — by pushing a lineman forward to block the field goal.

“It was a rule emphasis this year and it’s all about protecting the players,” Ryan said. “Was it an appropriate call? Yes.”

Geno Smith has already led three game-winning drives in the final seconds of regulation or overtime, including Sunday. And he’s not above crediting a little bit of luck.

“Usually it takes more skill than luck, but I do think you need a little bit of luck on your side,” Smith said. “I don’t know if we were or were not lucky, but it’s good to be 4-3 right now with an opportunity to put together some wins.”
