Will Clay Buchholz pitch in the World Series against the Cardinals?

Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz has had one bizarre season. Through the first two months of the 2013 season, the righty looked like the best pitcher in baseball. Then he missed three months due to a neck injury – an injury that was initially supposed to keep him out a few days.

Now, there’s a small possibility that Buchholz could miss the most important start of his MLB career. Boston manager John Farrell refuted those rumors Wednesday on WEEI sports radio, telling the station that “[Buchholz] will start.” But Farrell has yet to confirm who will start Game 3 of the World Series and more than a few people had questions on Buchholz’s health after Felix Doubront threw a three inning simulated game. The bullpen session, just a day before Game 1 of the Series, was curious considering Doubront is expected to be counted out of the ’pen.

John Lackey will start Game 2 for Boston but when Buchholz, Jake Peavy or possibly Doubront starts is still wholly up in the air.

“We’re still working on which day each guy will go,” Farrell told WEEI. “I know there’s been a lot of buzz on Clay’s physical condition. You know, where he is at, what’s taken place the last couple of starts. He’s ready to go. He will start.”

Looking back on Buchholz’s status during the middle of the regular season, it remains unclear as to whether or not the Red Sox would have rushed Buchholz back to the mound if they had lost ground in the AL East race. Fortunately for the Red Sox, they were steady throughout the summer, never losing more than three games in a row.
