Seven-run second leads Sox to 7-2 win over Indians

With heavy hearts and their minds surely on the events back in Boston, the Red Sox scored seven times in the second inning leading the way in their 7-2 win over the Indians Tuesday night in Cleveland. The Red Sox have now won a season-high four games in a row.

The Red Sox took advantage of a rough outing from Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez, who struggled for the second straight outing. He allowed seven runs on just two hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. He had no command of any of his pitches, leading to five walks and throwing 52 pitches.

Jimenez walked two runners home, and then Mike Napoli delivered the big blow, a bases clearing three-run double off of reliever Cody Allen, giving the Sox a 7-0 lead at the time. Napoli paced the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Jonny Gomes and David Ross all hit safely as well.

Felix Doubront continued success of Red Sox starters with another solid outing. He only allowed two runs over five innings, continuing the streak of Red Sox starters allowing three runs or less in every game this season. The southpaw struck out seven picking up his first win of the season.

Once again the Sox’ bullpen was outstanding, throwing four scoreless innings. Clayton Mortensen pitched the sixth and seventh, and Alex Wilson the eighth and ninth.

The teams will play their second game of a three-game series Wednesday night (7:10 p.m., NESN). Alfredo Aceves (0-0) will make his second start of the year for the Sox, replacing John Lackey who is on the DL with a right biceps injury, while the Indians will send former Red Sox pitcher Justin Masterson (3-0) to the mound.

What they’ll be saying: Once again the Red Sox received a great outing from their starter, this time it was Doubront in just his second start of the year. It is now 13 games in a row where the Red Sox starter has allowed three runs or less, a truly remarkable streak. The one downside to his outing was throwing 104 pitches over five innings, especially pitching with a seven-run lead. He will need to look to keep his pitch count down over his next few starts … Although the Red Sox put up seven runs, their bats were not all that impressive. The team struck out a season-high 16 times, including four from Daniel Nava and three from Will Middlebrooks.
