Playing the Field: Henneberry, Washington with cigarette revolution

We are often thought to be living in a seriously unhealthy time period. People love their McDonalds, their Pepsi, their steroid-laden fried chicken, meat-piled pizza and the like. That’s well-documented.

But we should give ourselves a little pat on the back once in a while as well: At some point over the past 20 years, most of us collectively realized that smoking cigarettes wasn’t worth it anymore. Health-wise, that was a giant step in the right direction.

This week, however, we had a couple of cigarette renegades make news. First, Watertown, Mass., resident David Henneberry reportedly found a terrorist in his backyard because of his nicotine craving. After Boston authorities lifted the lockdown on Watertown early Friday night, Henneberry reportedly stepped outside for a smoke. That’s when he saw blood on a tarp that was covering his boat. You know the rest.

Now, the cigarette story has been downplayed over the past couple of days, mostly because of our anti-Marlboro culture. But make no mistake, this was a win for butt lovers everywhere. A smoker found the most wanted man in America.

Second, we had Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington sneaking puffs in an actual major league dugout and, thankfully, it was caught on video, albeit briefly because of panicking sports TV producers:

No word on whether Washington will be reprimanded by MLB for this. For the record, Washington and the Rangers won the game big, 11-3, and this was definitely a celebratory, ninth-inning smoke.

It’s at this time that we should remember that smokers are people too, and that they used to be the cool ones not too long ago. Any early episode of “Mad Men” will show you, this country used to be cigarette-obsessed.

After what went down in the world this past week, take a vacation from your health and light one up. We all deserve a cigarette break.
