Five home runs power Red Sox to 10-1 win over Blue Jays

On a night with all three major Boston sports teams winning, the Red Sox did their part with a 10-1 win over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. The bats continued to stay hot, belting five home runs in the win, going along with a strong start from Clay Buchholz.

Stephen Drew started the home run bash with a two-run blast in the second. Then, Mike Napoli (4 RBIs) and Daniel Nava went back-to-back in the fourth, followed by Napoli unloading a mammoth, 467 foot (according to ESPN), three-run homer in the seventh to put the Sox up 8-0 at the time. Mike Carp hit a solo shot in the top half of the ninth inning to account for the five homers. The five home runs tied a season-high as the Red Sox also hit five in a game earlier this season at Toronto.

With a double in the sixth inning, David Ortiz extended his career-high hit streak to 22 games. Drew and Napoli each had three hits, while Will Middlebrooks and Nava had two hits apiece in the win, part of the 15-hit Red Sox attack.

Clay Buchholz threw another gem, tossing seven shutout innings allowing just two hits and striking out eight, becoming the league’s first six-game winner in the process. His ERA now sits at 1.01. Alex Wilson allowed the lone run in the eighth, with Clayton Mortensen getting the final four outs of the game.

The teams will close out their three-game series tomorrow night (7:07, NESN). Ryan Dempster will get the nod for the Red Sox, while Josh Johnson will get the ball for the Blue Jays.

What they’ll be saying: This was a good bounce back win after a tough loss Tuesday night. Buchholz gave the Red Sox exactly what they needed with another outstanding start. He probably could have thrown the eighth inning being at 101 pitches, but being up 8-0 there was no need to push the issue … No one could have ever imagined the start Napoli has gotten off to, especially after all the concerns about his hip this off-season. The first baseman has not missed a game all season and leads the league with 20 extra-base hits. The same can be said for Ortiz, who has now hit safely in all of his games this season after missing all of spring training and the first few weeks of the season.
