Playing the Field: Ryan Howard hits homer for blind fan

Ryan Howard has pulled up a little in 2013 from the nosedive that has become his career. So why not hit a home run for a blind child?

Howard did just that on Saturday as he came through after a 7-year-old named A.J. with Leber’s congential amaurosis (LCA) gave him a bracelet to wear during the game. LCA is a disease in which a newborn slowly loses their eyesight until they become completely blind. Only 1-in-80,000 people are diagnosed with the disease.

A.J. got a chance to meet Howard and before the game he asked him to hit a home run.

“I told him, I want you to hit a home run tonight just for this,” A.J. told the broadcast’s field reporter.

And because miracles do exist, Howard bombed one out in the second inning in his first at-bat of the game.

The kid’s response is great.

“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s probably for me!’” A.J. said.

Of course, I can’t write this post without mentioning the classic “Seinfeld” episode in which Kramer gets Paul O’Neill to hit a home run (or two) for a kid in the hospital.
