Phillies down BoSox behind Lee, Brown

Cliff Lee pitched a gem before handing the ball to Jonathan Papelbon for a perfect ninth inning as the Phillies downed the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, 3-1, Tuesday night.

Lee pitched eight strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits. He struck out eight and walked none in improving to 6-2 on the season.

Phillies third baseman Michael Young snapped an 0-for-22 slump with a solo home run in the first inning. It was just his second home run on the season.

Domonic Brown continued to swing a hot bat for the Phillies (25-27), slugging a solo home run in the ninth inning. Brown, who now has 11 homers on the season, was named NL Player of the Week on Tuesday.

The Red Sox scored their lone run of the game off Lee in the first inning, when Dustin Pedroia singled home Jacoby Ellsbury.

Papelbon, a hero of the 2007 World Series champion Red Sox, was serenaded with boos as he made his first appearance in an opposing uniform at Fenway since signing with the Phillies before the 2012 season. He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 10th save in as many tries this season.

The Phillies and Red Sox (32-21) play at Citizens Bank Park tonight.
