Four home runs power Red Sox past Angels 10-5

Led by four home runs the Red Sox beat the Angels 10-5 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park. The Sox were able to take two-of-three from the Angels this weekend and it’s their 39th win of the year to remain atop the AL East standings.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia was the star for the Sox as he hit two home runs, knocking in four runs. Mike Carp and David Ortiz also homered in the win. Saltalamacchia and Ortiz each had two hits along with Jose Iglesias to lead the 11-hit attack. The Red Sox scored four times in the third inning before blowing the game open with a three-run seventh. The Sox were helped by two errors by the Angels, which wasn’t indicative of how poorly they played defensively.

Ryan Dempster went six innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six to earn his fourth win of the season. The bullpen was once again solid aside from Koji Uehara who allowed two runs in just 2/3 innings of relief. Craig Breslow and Andrew Bailey both threw scoreless innings of relief to complete the win.

The Red Sox will now take to the road for a seven-game road trip beginning tomorrow night in Tampa (7:00, NESN) where John Lackey will get the call for the Sox and the Rays will counter with Alex Cobb.

What they’ll be saying: It was another solid offensive performance for the Sox completing an impressive homestand going 4-2 against the Rangers and Angels. They outscored their opponents 40-27 in the six games … Dempster delivered his third consecutive quality start. He’s gone at least six innings and allowed three runs or less in each of those starts. He seems to be getting back to the pitcher he was to open the season before going through a bit of a rough patch a few weeks ago.
