Alex Rodriguez has truly been cleared to play in rehab games — no cursing necessary.

One week after Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Rodriguez to “shut the f— up” about being cleared to play, the team sent out a release saying just that. A-Rod will be assigned to Single-A Charleston and suit up for his first game at third base tonight.

The team expects him to play about three innings.

Rodriguez had offseason hip surgery in January and was expected back sometime after the All-Star break. It’s likely he’ll need the equivalent of a full spring training before reaching the majors. That could mean about 20 games, according to reports.

But with Kevin Youkilis out for possibly the rest of the season and David Adams struggling, the Yankees could use Rodriguez’s bat, even in its currently diminished state. He hit .272 with 18 homers in 122 games played last season, but struggled badly in the postseason and was eventually benched by manager Joe Girardi.

Of course, Rodriguez is still facing the cloud of a performance-enhancing drug suspension. MLB is still investigating Biogenesis and its founder Anthony Bosch for providing drugs to clients, including Rodriguez and fellow All Stars Ryan Braun and Melky Cabrera.
