Mariano Rivera is the toast of … Boston?

There are two tried and true facts about Boston: They love the Red Sox and they hate the Yankees. Period. End of story. Both are ingrained at birth.

And they don’t just dislike the Yankees, they truly hate them. Boston fans will tell you all about Babe Ruth, Bucky Dent and Aaron Boone. Not even an historic, 0-3 ALCS rally in 2004 or title that year and in 2007 have ebbed the hate.

So there was the quintessential Yankee, Mariano Rivera, trotting in from the bullpen at Fenway Park on Saturday to close out a 5-2 win to a standing ovation.

Wait, what?

Yes, Rivera received a standing ovation from the Boston crowd. There were a few boos, yes, but a shocking amount of love by the Sox fans.

And that wasn’t the end of it. FOX’s Kenny Albert, who called the nationally televised game, was at a steakhouse after the game and tweeted that Rivera received a standing ovation at the restaurant as well.

What is going on Boston? Have you finally gone soft?

Here’s a good trivia question, though. This wasn’t the first time Rivera received a standing ovation at Fenway. He received the mock standing “O” in 2005 after blowing the Game 4 save in the previous season’s aforementioned ALCS. That’s the Boston we know and love.
