Red Sox bested by Rays in frustrating loss to fall out of first place

With first place in the American League East on the line the Red Sox and Rays played one of the most exciting and dramatic games of the year for the Red Sox, but they ultimately fell to the Rays 2-1 Monday night at Fenway Park. With the loss the Sox now trail the Rays by half a game for the AL East lead.

The Red Sox were trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth before a quick, but powerful rain shower halted the game for roughly 30 minutes and that is where things got interesting. David Price came back out despite the delay, but only for one batter after striking out Jonny Gomes. Ryan Lavarnway then doubled to left and was pinch-ran for by Daniel Nava. The next hitter Stephen Drew doubled to deep right, but Nava was unable to score from second as he did not get a good read on he ball and thought the ball could be caught. With Nava on third and Drew on second, Brandon Snyder flew out to left field and Nava was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on a play where Nava was clearly safe. Manager John Farrell was ejected for arguing the call.

Again in the ninth the Red Sox had a chance to tie the game and actually walk-off with the win as they had the tying and game-winning runs in scoring position, but Mike Napoli struck out to end the game. Snyder homered for the lone Red Sox run coming in the sixth inning.

Price was sensational once again for the Rays pitching against the Red Sox for the second time in less than a week. Price went 7 1/3 innings allowing one run on just two hits while striking out eight. Felix Doubront wasn’t nearly as impressive as he was in last week’s start against the Rays as he could only go five innings allowing two runs on eight hits, walking three and throwing 104 pitches. The Sox got tremendous relief appearances from Jose De La Torre (one inning), Drake Britton (two innings) and Koji Uehara (one inning) as the three combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief.

The Red Sox will now host the Mariners for three games beginning tomorrow night (7:10, NESN) where Brandon Workman will be opposed by Joe Saunders.

What they’ll be saying: This is the type of loss that can stick with a team for a long time. The Red Sox were able to stay in the game the whole night, despite getting virtually nothing against Price and then when they finally got him out of the game they had a base running mistake and then a call at the plate not go their way as they should have tied the game. It will be interesting to see the Sox respond falling the tough loss and falling out of first place once again.
