Phillies snap losing skid in final game before trade deadline

The Phillies snapped a season-high eight-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.

The Phillies (50-56) used home runs by two players rumored to be on the trade market — catcher Carlos Ruiz and third baseman Michael Young — to get the win.

Speculation that Young will be dealt before this afternoon’s non-waiver trade deadline ramped up Tuesday afternoon when the Phillies brought up third base prospect Cody Asche from the minors.

The speculation clearly didn’t bother Young, who smacked a two-run home run in the sixth inning. He went 2-for-4 on the night, also singling and scoring in the first.

Ruiz hit his first home run of the season in the fourth inning to give the Phillies a 4-2 lead.

John Lannan pitched seven solid innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, to pick up the win for the Phillies. He’s now 3-4 on the year.

Tuesday’s game was Giants right fielder Hunter Pence’s first in Philadelphia since the Phillies traded him to San Francisco (46-59) at the deadline last year. Pence was 1-for-4 in his return.
