Yankees, Mets show little movement on trade deadline day

The MLB trade deadline comes at 4 p.m. Wednesday, but the locals appear to be on the outside looking in this year.

The Yankees, always a threat, appear likely to stand back after making their move last week. The team added a much-needed right-handed bat in Alfonso Soriano; another notable offensive addition seems unlikely.

There was reportedly interest in Phillies third baseman Michael Young, but Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday that Young was unlikely to waive his no-trade to come to the Bronx. According to reports, he is only interested in returning to Texas, where he spent the first 13 years of his career.

“My family is a massive consideration in the decision-making process,” Young told reporters before Tuesday’s game. “I’ll just leave it at that.”

CBS Sports reported the Yankees had shown interest in Angels third baseman Alberto Callaspo before he was traded to Oakland late Tuesday night.

There is reportedly little movement on either Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes. Both are free agents at the end of the year and unlikely to re-sign in New York. Hughes has struggled badly recently and is 0-2 with a 4.71 ERA in his last four starts. He allowed five runs and 11 baserunners in just four innings in his last start.

The Mets meanwhile are likely in sell mode as they stand eight games under .500 and nine games out in the NL wild-card standings.

Their two biggest chips are Marlon Byrd and Bobby Parnell.

Parnell has 20 saves and a 2.30 ERA this season and would be a valuable reliever in a contender’s bullpen, but multiple reports indicate the Mets are asking for a large haul of prospects in a deal, making a move unlikely. Parnell is still an economic bargain for the Mets at $1.7 million this year. He won’t be a free agent until 2016.

Byrd is having a monster — and unexpected — 2013 season, but Newsday reported late Tuesday night it is unlikely the Mets will move him. Byrd missed much of 2012 serving a 50-game performance-enhancing drug suspension and actually played in the Mexican league to stay sharp. The Mets signed him to a one-year, $700,000 deal before the season and he has been arguably their best offensive player. He leads the team with 17 home runs, 60 RBIs and a .512 slugging percentage.
