Another game, another Red Sox walk-off win

It’s the year of the walk-off for the Red Sox as they had their second in as many games and 11th overall of the year as they scored six runs in the ninth inning to stun the Mariners 8-7 Thursday night at Fenway Park. The win completed a sweep of the Mariners, putting the Sox a full game ahead of the Rays in the AL East.

The Red Sox sent 10 batters to plate in the ninth inning capped off by Daniel Nava’s game-winning hit off the wall in dead center field to give the Sox one of their most dramatic wins of the season. Brock Holt started the rally with an RBI double; two batters later Shane Victorino delivered a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to two, 7-5. Dustin Pedroia and Jonny Gomes then had RBI singles to tie the game and set the stage for Nava’s heroics.

Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster didn’t have his best stuff once again as the right-hander allowed seven runs on nine hits over six innings while walking five and striking out six. He likely would have come out of the game earlier if the Sox hadn’t played a 15-inning marathon Wednesday. Steven Wright, who was called up before the game, replaced Dempster and pitched a scoreless three innings of relief to earn his second win of the season.

Felix Hernandez pitched like the ace that he is as he limited the Red Sox to just one run over seven innings. They got their lone run off Hernandez on a David Ortiz sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Sox were able to make things interesting once Hernandez exited as Victorino hit a solo homer into the Monster seats in the eighth inning cutting the deficit to 7-2 and to set the stage for the dramatic ninth.

The Red Sox will host the Diamondbacks for a weekend series beginning tomorrow night (7:10, NESN) where Jon Lester will take on Randall Delgado.

What they’ll be saying: Scoring six runs in the ninth inning of a game shows the fight and grit the Red Sox have as they feel they are never out of any game, no matter what the scoreboard reads. Even the most talented teams don’t have the ability to pull off these types of come-from-behind wins like the Red Sox have this season.

Dempster hasn’t been at his best over his past few starts as he has now allowed five or more runs in three of his last four starts. With the five walks, they are starting to be a small cause for concern as going into the game he had a 4.2 walks per nine innings, his highest since 2006. With Jake Peavy joining the staff, Dempster will need to start to turn things around, as he could be the odd man out whenever Clay Buchholz is ready to return.
