Doubront delivers as Red Sox roll over Diamondbacks

BOSTON — After suffering a loss in each of his last two outings, Felix Doubront got back on the winning track as the left-hander fired seven shutout innings in the Red Sox’ 4-0 over the Diamondbacks Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park. The Sox took two-of-three from the Diamondbacks over the weekend.

Doubront fired seven scoreless innings on five hits, while striking out five to pick up his eighth win of the year. He was in control of all of his pitches, needing only 95, which had been something he was struggling with earlier in the season. Matt Thornton came on and allowed a lead-off single before leaving with an apparent injury in the eighth. Drake Britton relieved Thornton and retired three of the four hitters he faced before Koji Uehara came and pitched a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation.

“With Felix he quickly got back into a number of counts,” manager John Farrell said. “First pitch strikes were a little elusive, but he was able to go to his breaking ball and change up and get the timing back with his delivery to maintain a lot of efficiency. He had a couple of key double plays that he was able to get and a number of fastballs they chased for strikeouts. Just kind of a workman like solid seven shutout innings for him.”

Despite not recording a hit until two outs in the fourth inning, the Red Sox were able to get to Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy in the fifth, knocking him from the game. Two straight singles from Stephen Drew and Brock Holt followed by a sacrifice fly from Jacoby Ellsbury scored the first run. Then, two batters later Dustin Pedroia doubled to left scoring Holt and ending the day for McCarthy after a season-low 4 1/3 innings.

Two more runs were added in the sixth as Ellsbury and Shane Victorino recorded back-to-back RBI singles to extend the Sox lead to 4-0. Victorino and Drew paced the offense with two hits apiece in the 9-hit attack.

The Red Sox will now take to the road for a season-long, 11-day, 10-game road trip beginning Monday night in Houston. John Lackey will get the start for the Sox and go up against Brett Oberholtzer.

What they’ll be saying: There is no denying what Doubront has given the Red Sox is more than they thought going into the season as he is now tied with John Lackey for the most quality starts on the staff with 13. He now has allowed three earned runs or less in 19 of his 20 starts this season, including 15 in a row, which is the longest such streak in a season since Tim Wakefield went 17 games in 1995 … Along with Victorino and Drew on fire at the plate, Ellsbury has now hit safely in 10 straight games and is hitting .311 with two doubles, a triple and a home run in that stretch.
