Red Sox come-from-behind to overtake Blue Jays in extra innings

As has been the case of late for the Red Sox, they have a thing for late game heroics and Tuesday was no different as Shane Victorino’s two-RBI single in the eleventh inning gave the Sox a 4-2 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto. The single scored Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jacoby Ellsbury to give the Red Sox a four-game lead over the Rays in the American League East.

The Red Sox entered the seventh inning trailing 1-0, but after Will Middlebrooks doubled, Ellsbury drove him home with an RBI single tying the game at one. Two batters later Dustin Pedroia ripped a single of his own scoring Ellsbury giving the Sox the lead. The lead was short-lived as Junichi Tazawa allowed a solo home run in the eighth inning to allow the Jays to tie the game at two, eventually leading to extra innings. Craig Breslow bailed Tazawa out in the ninth by coming on and getting a strikeout with the winning run in scoring position. Koji Uehara pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win.

Starter Ryan Dempster had his best start in quite some time. The veteran right-hander went seven innings allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four. Dempster left with a 2-1 lead, but the homer Tazawa allowed to tie the game also forced Dempster into his seventh no-decision in his last eight starts.

The teams will continue their three-game series tomorrow night (7:07, NESN) where Jon Lester will go up against Josh Johnson.

What they’ll be saying: This was the Red Sox’ 19th win in their last at-bat and 28th come-from-behind win this season as the team continues to find ways to win no matter what stands before them. Victorino was the star of the game for the Sox as he had the game-winning hit in the eleventh and also threw a runner out at the plate earlier in the game … Dempster pitched his best game in well over a month as it was the first time he pitched seven innings since June 4. The Red Sox are now 6-0 in his last six starts and he has not suffered a loss since June 19.
