Halladay effective as Phillies top Marlins

Roy Halladay looked good Tuesday night.

Good enough that Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. might want to keep him around another season if the price is right.

Halladay pitched six strong innings in what may have been his last start at Citizens Bank Park in red pinstripes. The Phillies held on to beat the Marlins, 6-4.

Halladay allowed just one run on four hits. His control, which was problematic in recent starts, was decent against Miami, as he allowed just three walks.

Chase Utley has eight RBIs his last two games after going 3-for-4 with a three-run home run Tuesday night. The three-run homer in the fifth inning gave Halladay and the Phillies a 6-1 lead.

The star second baseman also had an RBI single in a third inning that saw the Phils (71-80) get out to a 3-0 lead. Carlos Ruiz added a two-run single in the inning.

The Phillies bullpen gave up three runs after Halladay exited, but, after allowing a run himself in the ninth, closer Jonathan Papelbon struck out Marlins center fielder Justin Ruggiano with runners at first and second to end the game. It was Papelbon’s 28th save of the season.

Christian Yelich was 3-for-4 with a walk for the Marlins (55-96).

The Phillies improved to 18-13 under interim manager Ryne Sandberg.
