Jon Lester to start Game 1, Xander Bogaerts likely to start for Red Sox

A major reason for why the Red Sox are in their current position is due to the great depth that GM Ben Cherington has given manager John Farrell. That depth makes Farrell’s job that much easier, and that much harder.

The Boston skipper has many decisions to make ahead of Game 1 of the 2013 World Series (Wednesday, 8:07 p.m., FOX). One option he’s already picked is making Jon Lester his starter in the series’ first game. It’s the third straight series in which Lester has been the Game 1 starter for the Sox. Adam Wainwright will get the nod for the Cardinals on the mound in Game 1.

Farrell also had a decision to make when it comes to the infield. With Will Middlebrooks struggling at the plate and with Stephen Drew’s glove still coveted at short, Xander Bogaerts will likely get the start at third base in Game 1. Bogaerts got the start in Game 5 and 6 in the Detroit series and delivered for Farrell at the plate. He had a hit in each game and walked three times.
