Alex Rodriguez angrily storms out of arbitration hearing

Alex Rodriguez’s arbitration hearing continues to descend into the absurd.

According to WFAN Radio, Rodriguez angrily stormed out of his arbitration hearing with MLB Wednesday morning, calling the proceedings a “farce.”

“I am disgusted with this abusive process, designed to ensure that the player fails,” Rodriguez said in a statement shortly after leaving the hearing.

The Yankees third baseman is in the process of appealing his 211-game suspension over the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Rodriguez and his lawyers, led by Joe Tacopina, requested MLB Commissioner Bud Selig testify in front of the arbitrator, which was denied. WFAN reports this led to Rodriguez slamming his fist on the table and immediately leaving the hearing.

It is unknown how this will affect the hearing going forward, though it could result in Rodriguez’s camp pursuing a suit in a court of law. MLB wanted to avoid this scenario and came to an agreement with Rodriguez to hold the arbitration hearings.

The hearings have been a bit of a circus since the start.

A group of anti-MLB and pro-Rodriguez protesters camped outside the MLB offices in midtown Manhattan earlier this offseason as the proceedings got underway. On the first day, Hispanics Across America President Fernando Mateo, who organized the protests, got into an altercation with security outside the offices.

Rodriguez also canceled his first day of testimony this week, citing flu-like symptoms.

Rodriguez was suspended for 211 games on Aug. 5 for his connection to the Biogenesis clinic in Miami. Rodriguez was the only player out of 13 suspended to appeal the decision. He also received the stiffest penalty, with MLB saying Rodriguez attempted “to cover up his violations of the program by engaging in a course of conduct intended to obstruct and frustrate the Office of the Commissioner’s investigation.”
