Red Sox report: game recap and rumors for March 20th

The Red Sox dropped a decision to the Pirates at home Wednesday night, losing 4-2. Pittsburgh broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning courtesy of Red Sox minor-leaguer Dalier Hinojosa.

But more importantly, the Red Sox saw some encouraging signs from Xander Bogaerts, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Bogaerts improved his spring training batting average to .194, and manager John Farrell said he is happy with the youngster’s progress.

“Much more like we’ve seen Xander last year,” he said, “He looked comfortable in the box.”

Farrell also praised Bogaerts’ defensive game, saying, “You can see it in his body language, early on in camp, there was a lot of thought going into the situations that were in front of him, based on all the work and terminology he’s gotten from [infield coach Brian Butterfield], and I think it’s translated into some of the plays that he’s made defensively. He’s looked very good at shortstop.”

Jake Peavy, who pitched into the fifth inning and only surrendered one run, showed that he is just about ready for the start of the season.

“Tonight, I threw everything,” he said. “I felt good with everything but the changeup.”

Ryan Lavarnway reportedly on the trade block

The once highly touted catching prospect might be taking his talents elsewhere, according to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.

Lavarnway, 26, saw his batting average in AAA drop from .284 to .250 last season, and his major league batting average is just .208 from nearly 300 PAs.

Lavarnway has been playing first base and DH in spring training due to the logjam at catcher (A.J. Pierzynski and David Ross in the majors with Christian Vasquez and Daniel Butler in the minors).

An AL scout told McAdam “I think most teams now see [Lavarnway] as a No. 3 catcher, he could play a little first and DH, and be available if you needed someone behind the plate.”
