MLB video highlights: Red Sox top Yankees, 4-2

Things were going just like Jon Lester’s previous two starts of the year with Lester pitching a solid game, but getting no run support from his team.

That was until the sixth inning when the Red Sox scored four times, which was all the offense they would need in their 4-2 win over the Yankees in New York Friday night. The win evened the series at one game apiece.

With the Sox trailing 1-0, Jonny Gomes led the sixth inning off with a home run off of Yankees starter CC Sabathia. Later in the inning with two men on, Sabathia hung a slider to Grady Sizemore who crushed it into the right center field bleachers giving the Red Sox a 4-1 advantage of the time. Gomes and Sizemore led the Red Sox’ seven hit attack with two hits each.

Lester gave the Red Sox another solid effort and finally was rewarded with a win. The left-hander went 6 2/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six. He allowed a solo homer to Alfonso Soriano in the second and then another run in the seventh on a Kelly Johnson RBI single, which forced him from the game. Junichi Tazawa then came in and retired Derek Jeter to get out of the inning allowing just the one run.

Tazawa stayed in the game and pitched a scoreless eighth, before Edward Mujica pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

The teams will play the third game of their weekend series tomorrow afternoon (1:05, NESN, FS1) when John Lackey will take on Hiroki Kuroda.

What they’ll be saying: Taking two, tough-luck losses in his first two starts of the season, Lester finally was able to pick up his first win of 2014. He’s now gone at least six innings, struck out six or more and allowed two earned runs or less in each of his first three outings. The last Red Sox pitcher to do that to open the season was Pedro Martinez in 2001. Lester is now 8-3 in his career at the current Yankee Stadium, the most wins among any visitor since the park opened in 2009 … Gomes’ first homer of the season was a welcomed sign as he entered the game hitting just .174. Sizemore has carried his momentum from spring training to the regular season as he currently leads the team with a .333 average.
