MLB video highlights: White Sox beat Red Sox on walk-off error

Playing in frigid conditions in Chicago, although it was low-scoring, the Red Sox and White Sox played a pretty entertaining game with the White Sox coming out on top 2-1 on a walk-off throwing error by Xander Bogaerts in the bottom of the ninth.

There were two outs and runners on first and second in the ninth inning with Chris Capuano on the mound and Marcus Semien at the plate. His grouder just to the left of Bogaerts at shortstop was fielded cleanly, but then his throw in the dirt couldn’t be handed at first base by Mike Carp, which allowed Alexei Ramirez to score from second base who was off running on contact.

Once again the Red Sox offense didn’t get it done as they finished with only three hits and the one run. They got their lone run on a solo home run from Daniel Nava.

Jake Peavy gave the Red Sox a solid start going six innings allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out eight and walking four. Junichi Tazawa and Andrew Miller combined for 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief before Burke Badenhop entered in the eighth and started the ninth, taking the loss as he allowed a walk and a single before Capuano entered allowing a walk and the game-winning grounder from Semien.

The two teams will be back in action Wednesday night (8:05, NESN) where Clay Buchholz will look to put to an end to the Red Sox’ three-game losing streak as he is opposed by John Danks.

What they’ll be saying: Even though the conditions were poor, the Red Sox offense continues to be in a funk. As a team they’ve averaged just 2.66 runs in last their six games. Dustin Pedroia (wrist) missed his second straight game, but it’s expected he will return to the lineup Wednesday. Although Pedroia may be back, they may be without one of their best hitters to start the year as Mike Napoli slid head first into second base late in the game and jammed his finger into the base. Replays showed it bending backwards and hanging. He left the game and afterwards it was announced it was dislocated, but reset and the first baseman is day-to-day, but the team could ill-afford to lose their starting first baseman for any period of time as he is the only power threat besides David Ortiz.
