MLB video highlights: Red Sox score two in ninth to top White Sox, 3-1

With two of the top pitcher’s in the American League, Jon Lester and Chris Sale going head-to-head, Thursday’s game was one many had circled once the pitching matchups were announced.

The game lived up to the hype with the two pitcher’s taking no hitters into sixth inning, but like Wednesday night, the Red Sox were able to scrap away late, scoring two runs in the ninth inning to earn a 3-1 win Thursday night in Chicago against the White Sox. With the win the Red Sox took two-of-three over Chicago in the series.

Xander Bogaerts snapped Sale’s no hitter with a towering solo home run in the sixth giving the Red Sox a 1-0 lead. The White Sox responded in the bottom half of the inning by breaking up Lester’s perfect game and then scoring on an Adam Eaton RBI infield single.

The game remained tied at one until the top of the ninth when David Ross came through with a two-strike RBI double down the right field line scoring Mike Napoli. Then, following an intentional walk to Daniel Nava, Jonathan Herrera laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line, scoring Grady Sizemore, who was pinch-running, for a extra insurance run.

They wouldn’t need the extra run as Koji Uehara, returning from his few days off due to shoulder soreness, threw a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.

Lester went eight innings allowing just the one run on seven hits, while striking out nine in another dominant outing. Sale was equally as impressive, going seven innings allowing one run on just one hit striking out 10.

The Red Sox finished with five hits as a team with Mike Napoli and Mike Carp adding singles on top of Bogaerts, Ross and Herrera.

The Red Sox will return home for 15 of their next 18 games beginning Friday night (7:10, NESN) against the Orioles as John Lackey will take on Chris Tillman.

What they’ll be saying: Last night’s win could very well be a turning point for the team as they looked flat as could be prior to sneaking out a win in the 14-inning affair Wednesday night. Despite only finishing with five hits and just one off of Sale, they were making solid contact, just winning into some tough luck … Lester could realistically be 4-0, but a lack of run support has him at 2-2. He had all of his pitches working and did a good job of keeping the White Sox hitters off balance … Napoli returned to the lineup just one night after separating his ring finger and showed no lingering effects. It was also a good sign to get Uehara back after he was sent back to Boston earlier in the week to get his right shoulder checked.
