MLB video highlights: Orioles top Red Sox, 8-4 at Fenway Park

After winning two straight games to close out the series with the White Sox, it looked like the Red Sox might have found something to get them going after their sluggish start to the season.

No dice, as John Lackey was roughed up for a second straight outing in Baltimore’s 8-4 win over the Red Sox on a cold, brisk Friday night at Fenway Park.

Lackey allowed six runs on ten hits over 5 1/3 innings while walking four and striking out six. Prior to tonight he had only walked three batters in three starts. It was mostly singles and walks doing the damage as only two of the ten hits went for extra bases. He allowed three in the third, two in the fifth and one in the first.

“I thought he had good stuff tonight,” manager John Farrell said. “He managed their lineup with a couple of walks instead of giving in, but they hit a number of ground balls that found some holes and bunched some hits together. He doesn’t get a break early in that first inning on the double and then the infield base hit by (Adam) Jones. The two-run single in the fifth inning that was a little bit too much at that point to overcome.”

Burke Badenhop allowed a run in the seventh, following Andrew Miller who got out of a first and second jam in the sixth. Badenhop finished allowing one run over two innings of relief, while Edward Mujica allowed a run in the ninth.

The Red Sox worked the count against O’s starter Chris Tillman as he threw 122 pitches over five innings, but they could only score three runs off him. Every Sox starter had a hit despite the loss with Mike Carp (run) and Brock Holt (RBI) leading the way with two.

The teams will continue their weekend series tomorrow afternoon (1:35, NESN) where Felix Doubront will take on Bud Norris.

What they’ll be saying: With the loss the Red Sox haven’t won more than two straight games all season, which goes along with their 7-10 start as they just haven’t been able to get into any rhythm offensively. Some of this can be pointed to the number of injuries the team has had, causing a number of different lineups and not enough continuity. The pitching has been there consistently all year, but it wasn’t Lackey’s night. He gave up six runs for the second straight start, the first time he’s allowed that many runs in back-to-back outings … Fighting for playing time, Mike Carp went 2-4 with a walk as he has recorded a hit in each of his four starts this season. Tonight was his first start at first base, with the other three coming in left field. It will be interesting to see what the team does with him once Shane Victorino comes back with an abundance of outfielders.
