MLB video highlights: Orioles top Red Sox, 7-6 on Marathon Monday

There was a buzz around Fenway Park before the annual 11:05 a.m. Marathon Monday game with thousands gathering in the Fenway area for both the game and to watch the finish of the 118th Boston Marathon.

That buzz quickly subdued inside the park as Clay Buchholz allowed six runs on seven hits and departed the game after just 2 2/3 innings, taking the loss in the Orioles’ 7-6 win over the Red Sox. The right-hander didn’t allow a hit until the third inning, but the O’s started the inning with five straight singles leading to his exit. His ERA now stands at 7.71 on the year.

“He was a little bit flat,” manager John Farrell said. “He couldn’t seem to stop the momentum in the third inning. We get behind by those six runs and in a hole we did a great job coming back from, the bullpen did an outstanding job once again, but the six run deficit in the third inning proved the difference.”

The Sox once again did get a great performance from their bullpen. Burke Badenhop tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings allowing just one hit. Craig Breslow allowed a run in 1 2/3 innings, before Andrew Miller threw a 1-2-3 ninth.

Offensively, the Red Sox tried to get back in the game by scoring three times in the fifth inning on a Jackie Bradley Jr. RBI double, a Brock Holt sacrifice fly and a double by Dustin Pedroia. David Ross belted a solo home run in the seventh to cut the deficit to two and after the O’s tacked on another run in the seventh Mike Napoli hit a solo homer, making it a 7-5 game. The Red Sox scored a run in the ninth, but left the tying and potential winning runs in scoring position as Mike Carp ended the game grounding out to first.

The Red Sox will now host the Yankees for a three-game set beginning Tuesday night (7:10, NESN) with a terrific pitching matchup in Jon Lester taking on Masahiro Tanaka.

What they’ll be saying: Although the team fell for the fourth time in 14 Patriots Day games since 2001 and Buchholz struggled, there were some positives to come away with as the Sox once again rallied from an early deficit to make it a game late with the help of a strong bullpen. Things looked promising in the ninth when they loaded the bases with the meat of their order coming up, but overall as the team went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base … Monday marked the third time the Red Sox hit multiple homers in the a game, the first at Fenway Park.
