MLB video highlights: Red Sox blow out Blue Jays, 8-1

Following Thursday night’s embarrassing loss to the Yankees, manager John Farrell held a team meeting in advance of their weekend series with the Blue Jays. Whatever he said did a world of wonders as the Red Sox routed the Blue Jays 8-1 Friday night.

The Red Sox bats caught fire early on scoring five runs in the first three innings and eventually adding two more in the sixth to chase Blue Jays starter Mark Buerhle from the game. Every member of the Red Sox lineup recorded a hit in the win. A.J. Pierzynski (RBI) and Jackie Bradley Jr. (RBI) led the way with three hits, while Dustin Pedroia (2 RBI), Mike Napoli (RBI) and Will Middlebrooks (2 RBI) all had two hits in the win. David Ortiz crushed his fifth homer of the season in the third inning and the Sox added a run in the ninth for good measure.

Jake Peavy gave the Red Sox just what they needed from the mound, a very strong start. The veteran right-hander went seven innings allowing one run while scattering five hits while walking two and striking out seven. Chris Capuano struck out the side in the eighth and Andrew Miller threw a scoreless ninth.

The teams will be right back at it Saturday afternoon (1:07, NESN) where Clay Buchholz will be opposed by Brandon Morrow.

What they’ll be saying: The Red Sox had a season-high 15 hits and eight extra-base hits, which led them to the win. After struggling offensively during their last homestand they were much in need of a big offensive night to hopefully get the offense jump started. Middlebrooks was impressive in his return from the disabled list as on both his hits he did a good job of going to the opposite field and when he is doing that he is at his best … Farrell has said starting pitching is what will set the tone and get them out of their recent funk and Peavy did just that picking up his first win of the year in the process. Hopefully the team can get back-to-back good outings with Buchholz tomorrow who is coming off a rough start on Marathon Monday.
