MLB video highlights: Red Sox top Blue Jays, 7-6

Things weren’t looking so good for the Red Sox after Clay Buchholz allowed three first inning runs, but the right-hander settled down and the offensive picked him up with the bullpen hanging on for a 7-6 win over the Blue Jays Saturday afternoon.

Buchholz allowed the three runs in the first, but then settled down nicely not allowing a run in the next six innings. In all he went seven innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking three and striking out three. He looked much better than he did in his last start on Marathon Monday and even added some extra velocity hitting 93 MPH with his fastball.

It was an interesting start for Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow as he didn’t allow a hit in 2 2/3 innings, but he walked eight and ended up allowing four runs as he walked in a run and then A.J. Pierzynski blasted a grand slam off of Chad Jenkins with three of the four runs being charged to Morrow. The next batter, Will Middlebrooks followed with a home run of his own, the second time Sox hitters have gone back-to-back in the past week. The Red Sox only managed five hits on the afternoon, but took advantage of the poor control from Morrrow.

With the Sox leading 7-3, Junichi Tazawa allowed two runs in the eighth, only recording one out. The runs were the first he’s allowed this year. Chris Capuano came in and got an out as well as issuing a walk, which forced closer Koji Uehara in to get the final out in the frame. Uehara allowed a Jose Bautista homer to lead off the ninth, but was able to hang on for the save.

The teams will wrap up their weekend series with the Red Sox going for their first sweep of the season Sunday afternoon (1:07, NESN) as Jon Lester will take on R.A. Dickey.

What they’ll be saying: Things got interesting late, but the Red Sox were able to hold on for their second straight win. It was the first runs of the season allowed by both Tazawa and Uehara as Tazawa in particular has struggled against the Blue Jays as he’s allowed four homers in 27 plate appearances in Rogers Centre with a 6.60 ERA vs. Blue Jays. Uehara allowed three hits for the first time since June 9, 2012, but was able to hang on for the save … Things weren’t looking good for Buchholz in the first as his confidence appeared shaken, but he was able to pull it together and pick up the win and hopefully build some momentum for the remainder of the season.
