MLB video highlights: Blue Jays top Red Sox, 7-1

Poor defense and the inability to bunch together hits were two of the things plaguing the Red Sox in the first month of the season. They came into play again Sunday as the Red Sox fell to the Blue Jays 7-1 in Toronto, failing to get back to .500 in the process and are now 12-14 on the year.

Although they were only credited with one error, a few misplays and finishing with just six total hits didn’t help the cause in the six-run loss, as the Blue Jays blew the game open in the late innings scoring two times in the seventh and three in the eighth. Jon Lester went seven innings allowing four runs on five hits while striking out seven and not walking a batter. Andrew Miller allowed three runs in 1/3 of an inning of work in the eighth as Burke Badenhop gave up a hit allowing two inherited runners to score in his 2/3 of an inning to finish up the frame. David Ross dropped a foul fly ball and Xander Bogaerts couldn’t get an out on a grounder up the middle in the three-run eighth inning.

Offensively the Red Sox couldn’t get anything going against Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey. The knuckleballer went 6 1/3 innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out six. The lone Red Sox run came in the second inning on a Jackie Bradley Jr. RBI single scoring Bogaerts. Bogaerts led the offense finishing with two of the six hits in the loss.

The Red Sox will be off Monday before hosting the Rays for a three-game midweek series at Fenway Park.

What they’ll be saying: The lack of run support continued for Lester as the going into the game he had received the second-fewest runs of support in all of baseball, but even with the lack of run support it’s tough to win many games when giving up seven runs … The loss spoiled what was a tremendous first two games in Toronto as the Sox couldn’t complete their first sweep of the season. With getting the lineup back to full strength and returning home to Fenway for eight straight games. this is a big next week for the Red Sox as they look to get over .500 for the first time all season.
