MLB video highlights: Athletics top Red Sox, 3-2 in extras

After going the first 12 appearances of the season without allowing run, Red Sox reliever Chris Capuano has now allowed runs in his last two outings with Sunday’s run being a costly one as it was the game-winning run in the tenth inning of the Red Sox’ 3-2 loss to the Athletics at Fenway Park. The Sox are now 0-9 in games since the second of the year when attempting to get back to .500.

With two outs in the inning Jed Lowie doubled off the wall. Then, following an intentional walk and a standard walk, Burke Badenhop replaced Capuano to face Yoenis Cespendes with the bases loaded. Badenhop induced a ground ball, a slow-roller to third but Will Middlebrooks was unable to get him at first on a bang-bang play, which proved to be the difference in the game.

The Red Sox wouldn’t go quietly as they threatened in the ninth, but the A’s were able to get out of it with terrific defense.

“He gets two quick outs, then a fastball up to Lowie for the double and we’re sitting in a two out situation and they have their best right-handed hitter at the plate,” manager John Farrell said of Capuano in the tenth. “We looked to manage the inning and get the final out and then with (Alberto) Callaspo the 3-2 changeup puts our backs against the wall in a bases loaded situation. The final out was tough to come by.”

It was another strong start for John Lackey even though he didn’t factor into the decision. The right-hander went six innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four. He allowed a run in the first and another in the sixth on an RBI double off the bat of Josh Donaldson. It was the ninth straight start where the Red Sox starter has gone at least six-complete innings.

The Red Sox scored their first run in the fifth inning on a Grady Sizemore double scoring Mike Carp. There could have been even more damage done in the inning, but Jackie Bradley Jr. grounded into an inning ending double play with the bases loaded. The Sox tied the game in the seventh inning on A.J. Pierzynski’s first career home run at Fenway Park, a solo shot over the Red Sox bullpen.

The Red Sox will be off on Monday before hosting the Reds for a two-game, mid-week series beginning Tuesday night (7:07, NESN).

What they’ll be saying: It was another frustrating loss for the team as they once again couldn’t get the elusive hit as they went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, leaving five runners on base. This also comes back to them being 3-8 in one-run games this season … Although Lackey didn’t have his best stuff, he still pitched well enough to earn the win. It was the fifth time in seven starts this season where he’s allowed two runs or less. It was the sixth straight quality start and 22nd overall, tying the A’s for the most in the league. The starting pitching has been there all season, it’s the offense that just can’t seem to get out of the mud.
