MLB video highlights: Red Sox walk-off over Reds, 4-3

The Red Sox may have re-discovered some of their 2013 magic as they were able to walk-off with a 4-3, extra innings win over the Reds Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

After blowing a two-run lead in the eighth, the Red Sox were able to eventually walk off in the 12th inning on a Grady Sizemore ball off the Green Monster to score David Ortiz who led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Mike Napoli single. It was the second walk-off win of the year for the Red Sox.

“You never get old of walk-offs,” Sizemore said as it was his first walk-off hit since 2006. “It was fun and was an exciting moment. I was glad I could come through.”

With a two-run lead in the eighth inning, the usually dependable Junichi Tazawa entered and allowed two runs in the inning to allow the Reds to tie the score at three. Tazawa has now allowed eight hits and five runs in his last four innings spanning four appearances.

Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless ninth before Andrew Miller came on for two hitless innings followed by Craig Breslow, who picked up the win by throwing a 1-2-3 12th.

The Red Sox didn’t waste anytime scoring as they scored a run in the first on an RBI ground out from Napoli and then added two more in the third. They loaded the bases against Reds starter Homer Bailey where he walked Napoli, forcing in the second run of the game. The next hitter, Sizemore, sharply singled up the middle scoring Dustin Pedroia for the third run.

It was a typical outing for starter Felix Doubront as he was good at times, but struggled at others. Fortunately for him he was able to limit the damage as he went 5 1/3 innings allowing one run on five hits while walking three and striking out three. He exited in the sixth with runners on first and second, but Burke Badenhop forced an inning ending double play on the first pitch he threw to escape the jam. Badenhop then threw a scoreless seventh inning, finishing with recording five outs on 11 pitches.

The teams will close out their brief two-game series Wednesday night (7:10, NESN) where Jake Peavy will take on Mike Leake.

What they’ll be saying: For the Red Sox even though they came out on top, it was a game of missed opportunities as they had a few chances particularly early in the game to blow the game open against Bailey, but as has been the case of late they couldn’t get the elusive clutch hit. Overall, they went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position leaving 13 runners on base … Aside from Tazawa’s struggles, the bullpen was very strong starting with Badenhop’s double play in the sixth inning. Uehara allowed two hits in the ninth, but got out of it without any damage. Miller delivered perhaps the best performance going two innings and needing only 25 pitches to do so and lastly, Breslow looked sharp in his second outing in 10 days to pick up the win. Coming into the day the bullpen ranked second in the AL with a 3.27 ERA.
