MLB video highlights: Red Sox fall in extras to Twins, 4-3
Minnesota wasn’t too kind to Andrew Miller this week as in the three-game series he allowed two walk-off hits, the latest coming Thursday afternoon in the tenth inning of the Red Sox’ 4-3 loss to the Twins.
Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the ninth inning the Red Sox scored two runs on a bases loaded, two-out single by Will Middlebrooks tying the game at three, but they couldn’t keep the momentum going falling in extras.
Kurt Suzuki doubled with one out in the tenth, then following a strikeout, Aaron Hicks singled off Miller, plating Suzuki for the game-winning run and the Red Sox’ second walk-off loss in the three game series. Miller pitched 1 2/3 innings before allowing the run in the tenth.
Craig Breslow and Chris Capuano each pitched perfect innings of relief before Miller.
The Twins scored all three runs off Clay Buchholz in the second inning, but it appeared that would be all they would need as Phil Hughes shut down the Red Sox bats allowing just one run over six innings. Buchholz went six innings allowing just three runs, but it wasn’t that great of an outing as he allowed ten hits for the second consecutive start. Chris Parmelee hit a two-run homer and Brian Dozier had a sacrifice fly to account for the three Twins runs off Buchholz.
The Red Sox scored their first run on an infield single from Mike Carp in the fourth inning.
Boston will return home tomorrow night (7:10, NESN) for a weekend series with the Tigers where Jon Lester will take on Max Scherzer.
What they’ll be saying: The Red Sox once against showed resilience coming from behind after falling behind early, but they just couldn’t plate another run in the ninth and then fell in the tenth … Just looking at the stats for Buchholz it would appear he pitched fairly well, but for the second straight start he didn’t have his best stuff, leaving a number of pitches up in the zone. He hasn’t thrown many change ups of late, possibly because he doesn’t have a good feel for the pitch right now … A big weekend series awaits the Sox this weekend against the Tigers at Fenway as they look to bounce back from a tough series in Minnesota.
