For years, DirecTV has targeted sports fans and won, as the dish company has long been known as the go-to television provider if you want to gorge on pro football with its Sunday Ticket package.

But now Google wants a piece of the billion-dollar Sunday Ticket pie, and with its deep pockets, it’s safe to assume Roger Goodell may jump ship.

According to the Associated Press, Google and the NFL have been holding talks recently. DirecTV’s contract with the NFL expires at the end of the 2014 season.

Google and the NFL may also be discussing ways to improve the in-stadium experience. NFL TV numbers are through the roof, but with the home experience so good, NFL executives are worried more and more fans are opting to stay home over buying a ticket and all that comes with that (parking, concessions, etc.). The Jacksonville Jaguars have even flirted with the idea of airing the Red Zone channel on its in-stadium video screens during Jags games this year.

Google could also come up with NFL-specific devices in the coming years to bring the NFL directly to the viewer.
