Eagles ‘quarterback conversation’ getting interesting

Vick not 100 percent; Foles takes first-team reps

On Day 3 of the great Philadelphia quarterback controversy, there was light. As in, there was some light shed on which signal-caller might line up under center Sunday against Dallas.

Mike Vick is rehabbing from a pulled hamstring, an injury that occurred two weeks ago in New York. He has been practicing with the Eagles, just not with the first-team offense. That trend continued Tuesday as backup Nick Foles ran with the ones.

After practice, Vick sounded like he was making the decision for Chip Kelly. The coach hasn’t declared his starter yet.

“I feel it getting better, it’s just when I try to burst it’s still that knot is there,” Vick said. “But I think another week of rehab will put me in a position where I can start gaining confidence in it and doing the things I need to do.”

Kelly didn’t meet with the media Tuesday, but he didn’t rule out Foles taking over the job on a full-time basis earlier in the week. Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said, at this point, it’s simply a conversation, not a controversy.

“In my mind, it’s a quarterback conversation,” Shurmur said. “I understand the number crunching, comparing the two quarterbacks. But you know, at the end of the day, when you’re asking me the questions, what we are trying to do is get the guys that are healthy ready to play. And the decision-making comes down to what coach Kelly decides the guys that are out there.”

Vick was medically cleared to play last week in Tampa Bay, but Kelly decided he wasn’t 100 percent. The team chose to dress him as the emergency quarterback in that game. It sounds like he could be in a similar position this week.

“If I had to go in the game, I could just sit in the pocket and throw the football,” Vick said. “Right now, I’ve got to rehab. I’ve got to get myself back to 100 percent to where I can go out there and help this team if I’m out there on the field.”
