Arguably the biggest off-season need for the Eagles was at safety.

The Birds hope their newest acquisition will fill that need and then some; the Eagles signed former Saints safety Malcom Jenkins to a three-year, $16.25 million deal Tuesday.

More than half of the contract is guaranteed money, $8.5 million.

At one point last season, the Eagles carried six safeties on their roster.

But just prior to Jenkins’ signing, the Eagles had just two under contract, Earl Wolff and Keelan Johnson. It is expected that the Eagles will add more before the draft, and could pick safties then as well.

Jenkins has a Super Bowl ring from his time with the Saints and is just 26-years old. He was second-team All-Pro in 2010.

Eagles re-sign punter Jones

The Eagles inked punter Donnie Jones to a 3-year deal Tuesday, worth up to $6 million.

The 33-year-old special teams specialist is coming off of his best season in the NFL, setting team records in net punting average (40.4 yards), and punts inside the 20 yard line (33).

He also grossed the third most yards in Eagles’ history for a punter. He was a Pro Bowler in 2013.

The Eagles also made cap space Tuesday, releasing safety Patrick Chung.

Cowboys cut Ware to make cap room

The Eagles and the rest of the NFC East feared him at the line of scrimmage.

The Cowboys feared his high salary.

After nine years and 117 sacks with Dallas, DeMarcus Ware will wear another jersey next season. With the move, the Cowboys will save $16 million in cap space.

“A decision like this, involving a man who is a cornerstone player in the history of your franchise, is extremely difficult,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said.
