This year’s Boston Flower & Garden Show, “Nurtured by Nature,” hopes to serve as the antidote to our harsh winters. With landscape gardens, floral arrangements and numerous hands-on activities, the show offers plant-lovers throughout New England a taste of spring. “The theme was suggested by last year’s difficult winter, when it felt like nature was kind of our enemy,” Show Director Carolyn Weston says. “We just wanted to remind people that while gardening takes some effort, it has many many rewards.” The event returns to the Seaport Wolrd Trade Center and will feature demos and workshops like the “The Growing & Harvesting of Tea” and “Urban Beekeeping.” Many of the activities cater to urban gardening in an effort to help Bostonians stay in touch with nature. Plus, most of the plants featured at the show are from the New England area, so any plants guests take home shouldn’t have trouble growing in Boston’s climate. “There’s no space too small to build a garden, whether it’s in a milk crate or a container on your windowsill or a window box, there’s plenty of ways to incorporate gardening, plants, flowers and even edibles into an urban space,” Weston says. Those who prefer not to get their hands dirty can view the exhibitions and entries to the show’s various competitions, or check out information on how to grow their own Instagram-ready peonies (“Passion for Peonies”) or create a Pinterest-worthy hen house (“Backyard Chicken Coop”). There will also be about 200 vendors selling plants, seeds, plant-related art and more. Kids can enjoy the Little Sprouts Children’s Center, where planting activities, story hour, face painting and paper flower making will be offered.
The Boston Flower & Garden Show will run March 16-20 at the Seaport World Trade Center. Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors, $10 for children ages 6-17 and free for children under 6. Tickets after 5 p.m. are $15.
