A police officer in Stoughton shot a knife-wielding assailant in broad daylight Thursday, according to multiple reports.

Stoughton Police would only confirm that an officer had been involved in a shooting. However, multiple news outlets are reporting that the person shot was wielding a knife. Details were scarce Thursday afternoon.

The Brockton Enterprise quotes Stoughton Police Chief Paul Shastany as saying, “We’re actively investigating and we don’t have any further comment at this time.”

The condition and the identity of the person who was shot was not released. It’s unclear what charges that individual could face.

The shooting happened near the corner of Brook and Central streets around 12:30 p.m. The scene was cordoned off with yellow police tape Thursday afternoon.

Calls to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office were not immediately returned on Thursday.
