Hotel chic in your own home

The caramel, brown and coral colour scheme and clean-lined furnishings evoke a warm but modern look at the Loden.

I often come home from my travels with memories of the decorating details from some exceptional hotels I stay at. No matter where I travel I always fall in love with a detail, colour or furniture style that I want to incorporate into my own home’s decor.

All hotels set out to create unique visual experiences for their guests and Vancouver’s Loden hotel is no exception.

Tucked in the distinguished Coal Harbour Neighbourhood;  the 77-room luxury hotel opened its doors in 2008 and has been winning awards for its customer service and great looks ever since. Its warm and inviting colours and style creates an atmosphere that definitely says urban on a human scale; something even trendy travellers appreciate when away from the comforts of home. I love their surprising use of the colour orange; long before it was ever trendy.

The wood-toned walls wrap guest rooms in a warm glow, which is a great colour choice for Vancouver’s grey days. For a similar look, paint your walls a deep caramel colour (Benjamin Moore’s Capilano Bridge CC-440 is a great match) or cover them with a paintable wood textured wallpaper to introduce the woodgrain colour and element.

The mirrored wall behind the bed reflects light from the window and keeps the room feeling open and airy.Try standing two tall floor mirrors behind each night stand to achieve a similar effect in your own room.

The patterned carpet (a great decorating trick of most hotel rooms) not only camouflages wear but also adds a warm texture to the room. Carpet tiles are a great way to add a pattern to your floor without costing a lot; or better yet, place decorative carpet runners down each side of the bed to warm up your space and add some texture to the room.

The simple shapes of the bed, nightstands and lamps give the room a modern edge. With the mid-century modern look on the return, you might want to search a few trendy classifieds (like craigslist or Kijiji) for good buys. Otherwise, invest in one or two good pieces that you know you will love for a long time.

A burst of colour (coral is the accent colour of choice at the Loden Hotel) can be changed seasonally to follow trends or incorporate a new colour as desired. The secret to colour is to use it in things that can easily be changed out seasonally; pillows, a vase or lampshades are an inexpensive way to indulge in trendy colours.
