What are New Yorkers doing while waiting for Hurricane Sandy recovery?

Brooklynites finally step out to assess the damage of Hurricane Sandy.

With the mass transit system at a standstill and many homes throughout the city cut off from electricity, New Yorkers are forced to find some inventive ways to entertain themselves.

The coastal area of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, though mostly unscathed by the power outages, endured a fair share of fallen trees and torn power lines.

We hit the streets to ask how these veterans were coping with the fall out.

Kevin Savarese, 16, student, Bay Ridge
John Savarese, 50, salesman, Bay Ridge

Savarese Sr.: We’re doing some general clean-up and taking pictures, just looking at all the damage in the neighborhood.

Chiara Scandon, 46, teacher, Bay Ridge

We’re just walking around. My son is a photography major, so he is out taking pictures of the damage. Today we will stay home, maybe bake a cake and try to recover, mostly psychologically, from the night. It was a very scary night. But we are some of the lucky ones who didn’t lose power.

Elizabeth Miraglia, 27, library assistant, Bay Ridge
Dominic Miraglia, 27, funeral home manager, Bay Ridge
Terri Ridout, 25, customer service and repair, Bay Ridge

Mrs. Miraglia: Our power is still working. The TV and internet is still on and a couple restaurants are open. We’ll probably walk to the water to check out the damage.

Mr. Miraglia: We did all the major preparation. It’s just going to be video games, movies… it’s going to be some popcorn and chili dip.

Heather Hamilton, 41, owner of Long’s Wines & Liquors, Park Slope

On Sunday, we did a day’s worth of business in the first hour. We quadrupled our business that day. We joked with the customers that we were their third stop, after the grocery store and the hardware store. Batteries, bread and booze. We sold mostly wine – obviously a lot more of it.
