Cape Cod a breeding ground for Great White Sharks, researchers say

Tourists aren’t the only ones who flock to Cape Cod in the summer.

Researchers say that the frequent sightings of Great White Sharks in the Cape waters are a result of the area being a breeding ground for the animal. The specialists will return to Cape Cod this summer to study the habits of Great Whites during August, largely known as their most visible month.

OCEARCH scientist Chris Fischer holds the key to finding out why Cape Cod beach-goers see so many shark fins pop up in the water. Fischer, who tagged two Great Whites off the coast of Chatham last September, told WBZ that his work has led him to believe that the Cape is a breeding ground.

“It’s the right time of year,” said Fischer.

Fischer and his crew of seven will return in August with the OCEARCH 126-foot modified Alaskan crab boat that can lift sharks out of the water, he told the Cape Cod Times.

They will surgically implant an acoustic tag into the shark that broadcasts an identifying signal to receivers along the shoreline. These types of tags can last a decade, as compared with others that last one to five years, Fischer said.
