Philly block city
To kick off Philly Tech Week on April 5 and 6, Dr. Frank Lee, founder of Drexel University’s Entrepreneurial Game Studio, witnessed his brainchild come to life. People took turns playing Tetris via LED lights on the 100,000-square-foot Cira Centre. His goal? Leveraging technology and gaming to bring people together for a few hours. “It was mesmerizing and a relief that it actually worked,” Lee said.
Festivities included 10 food trucks, live music and 15 local companies showcasing their games. He says it “felt like a huge block party.”

An attitude of gratitude
Does gratitude spike patience regarding delayed financial rewards? One psychology professor at Northeastern University thinks so. Three groups were assigned different tasks. One group recalled an event that made them thankful. Another group thought about an event that boosted happiness. The last group considered events of a typical day. Each group wrote about their recollection and made 27 choices about receiving money immediately or a larger amount in the future. Professor David DeSteno concluded the more grateful group exerted less willpower when postponing immediate gratification.

Future moguls get schooled
On April 10, New York University’s Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music hosted RECESS, a festival celebrating music industry innovation. Aspiring entrepreneurs attended a speakers series with notable names like Brent Freeman, CEO of the online fashion company Roozt. They also participated in a competition to win a chance to pitch their ideas to major investors. The day was capped off by musical performances at SPIN. Vicki Salemi
