The 2012 Tony Award nominations were announced live today by Kristin Chenoweth (“Wicked”) and Jim Parsons (“The Normal Heart”). The show that sucked up bids like a Hoover was “Once,” the quirky love story about a vacuum repairman-turned-musician. This musical, adapted from the 2006 film, claimed 11 nods. “Porgy and Bess” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It” earned 10 apiece, while “Follies” and “Newsies” each pulled in 8. As far as straight plays go, “Peter and the Starcatcher” caught nine nominations. “Other Desert Cities” received five, though star Rachel Griffiths was overlooked. Also surprisingly unmentioned were the leads in the highly anticipated, recently opened musical blockbuster “Evita.”
