If you have a chance to step away from all the barbecues, here’s what you can do around the city over the holiday weekend (plus one Thursday night concert).

ART

Boston Arts Festival
Saturday and Sunday
Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park
105 Atlantic Ave., Boston
Free, 617-635-3911
www.cityofboston.gov

Founded by Tom Menino in 2003, this annual festival of what’s affectionately called “the ahts” features a variety of performances, jewelry and crafts vendors, interactive art installations and other activities, showcasing Boston’s artistic vibrancy. Performers include the storytellers of the Moth, experimental musical group the Animal Hospital Ensemble and local poet Nick Flynn.

From My Father’s Hand: The Art of Abraham Isaac Goldberg, 1910-1970
Through September 12
Chandler Gallery
20 Sacramento St., Cambridge
Free, 617-349-6287 ext. 15
www.maudmorganarts.org

Abraham Isaac Goldberg, a Lithuanian Jew who immigrated to Canada in 1929, created his hundreds of drawings and paintings in free moments away from his grueling factory job. He worked in a variety of genres, from clever, anti-capitalist cartoons to autobiographical sketches to sensitive portraits to wooded landscapes, all of which are on display here, selected by his son Haim.

COMEDY

‘I’ll Leave You with This’
Friday, 11 p.m.
ImprovBoston
40 Prospect St., Cambridge
$10, 617-576-1253
www.improvboston.com

Though they’re best known for their improv and sketch shows, for the month of August ImprovBoston has featured local stand-up comedians every Friday. Their last stand-up showcase this month is hosted by Sam Ike and features Ethan Marsh, Ken Reid and Alingon Mitra. All three are worth seeing by themselves—together they amount to a lotta bang for your comedy buck.

MUSIC

Ebinho Cardoso Trio
Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
Regattabar
1 Bennett St., Cambridge
$16, 617-395-7757
www.getshowtix.com/regattabar

Ebinho is a Brazillian bass virtuso and recent transplant to Boston. He plays a six-string bass capable of higher tones than a standard four-string. In his trio, backed by a classic stand-up bass and drummer, he plays it like a deep, mellow-toned guitar. Its rich, velvety sound is a perfect compliment for Cardoso’s smooth songwriting and romantic vocals.

THEATER

‘Macbeth’
Through Sunday
Various locations
Boston
Free, 443-880-4328
www.brownboxtheatre.org

If you’re craving more free outdoor Shakespeare after this summer’s “Twelfth Night”, Brown Box Theater will be performing “The Scottish Play”, as superstitious performers like to call it, for all and sundry in several Beantown spots through the end of the week. Check the website for details. Nothing like a good dose of murder and insanity to send off the summer in style!
