Alfonso Cuaron has won the Oscar for Best Director for his space saga “Gravity.”

The Mexican director was last seen with “Children of Men,” an acclaimed cult favorite about the apocalypse. He also directed “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” the sex-fueled “Y Tu Mama Tambien” and “A Little Princess.”

“Gravity” has been a hit with audiences and critics, who have turned it into a moneymaker and acclaimed masterwork. The film is perhaps most admired for its use of digital camerawork that makes the audience feel like they’re floating helplessly through outer space.

“Gravity” is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress for Sandra Bullock and a variety of technical awards.
