Amazon announced it’s giving a second season to drama “Alpha House,” one of its first scripted TV experiments. The show stars John Goodman as one of a trio of Republican senators living in a house together. In the second season, they decide to form a jazz trio, but argue about who gets the longest sax solo. Or something more closely related to politics, probably.
The retailer/newly minted TV network/potential drone delivery service will also be sending a group of comedy pilots and kiddie programming to series after a trial period asking viewers to vote on which pilots they liked. Included in the batch of shows getting the nod for a series order is “Transparent”, starring Jeffrey Tambor, Gaby Hoffman, Jay Duplass, and Amy Landecker. The show, from Jill Soloway (of “Six Feet Under” and “United States of Tara” fame), is about a family coming to terms with various secrets they’re all keeping from each other. We wouldn’t want to completely give away the main secret, so we’ll just say it’s right there in the title if you hate surprises. Watch it once the episodes are available, and expect a big debate about whether Jeffrey Tambor will get nominated for an Emmy for a show on Amazon.
Also getting the pick up are dramas “The After,” from “X-Files” creator Chris Carter, and “Bosch,” starring Titus Welliver. And for Gael Garcia Bernal fans, there’s the comedy “Mozart in the Jungle,” a behind the scenes look at life in a symphony. For the kids, there’s “Gortimer Gibbons Life on Normal Street” and “Wishenpoof,” which sounds like the Yale a capella group Grandpa Gilmore loved in “Gilmore Girls.”
