Before Fringe takes over NYC, check out these shows

It won’t be long before the Fringe Festival takes over the city with all its wilds and whimsy. And while we totally recommend getting swallowed up by the boundless Fringe calendar and seeing as many performances as possible, may we also suggest getting a load of these events before they wrap up?

On the stage: “Bird in the Window”

Shelli Pentimall Bookler just received her MFA in playwriting from Temple. To celebrate, she started her own theater company, Underbite. The company’s first play, written by Bookler, is “Bird in the Window,” about a college student struggling with her fear that someone is stalking her. While we do expect (and hope) to see this company sticking around, that doesn’t mean you should sleep on their debut.

Through Saturday, Shubin Theater, 407 Bainbridge St., 215-592-0119, www.shubintheatre.com

On the wall: The Lightroom’s annual group show

The Lightroom is a co-op community for photographers in the Art Museum neighborhood. They provide dark room and gallery facilities to their members, and those members are holding their annual group show at 3rdStreet Gallery. Whether you’re a lover of fine photography or an Instagram junkie, there’s something appealing for everyone in this collection.

Through Sunday, 3rdStreet Gallery, 58 N. SecondSt., 215-625-0993, www.3rdstreetgallery.com

Beyond the wall: “This Is Sign Painting”

Between this expert exhibition and the documentary “The Sign Painter Movie,” old school brush-to-board artwork has been made new again this year. Head to 3rdWard in Fishtown and check out the impeccable handcrafted signs curated by locals Sedso Design and Working Class Creative.

Through Saturday, 3rdWard, 1227 N. FourthSt., philly.3rdward.com

In the water: Mighty Mike at Adventure Aquarium

Mighty Mike, the country’s largest alligator outside of Florida, is hanging out at the aquarium. This tough guy is nearly as long as an average sedan, and tips the scales at 800 meaty, scaly pounds. Check him out before he leaves Jersey.

Through Sept. 16, Adventure Aquarium, 1 Riverside Dr., Camden, 856-365-3300, www.adventureaquarium.com
