Cocktail trend: The Moscow mule

We’re seeing the Moscow Mule everywhere this winter — it’s the drink you keep spying at bars in that cute copper mug and wondering what it is. As with every cocktail that gets trendy, bartenders are clamoring to put their own spin on it.

Smirnoff Vodka hosted a competition to find the best version and Philadelphia residentGenymphas Higgs was the winner for the Northeast region. Here’s how to make his Berry Cool Mule at home.

Berry Cool Mule

Ingredients:
1.5 oz. Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka
1 oz. Fresh blueberry simple syrup
1 oz. Sweetened lime juice
4 Fresh mint leaves
Fresh peeled ginger
Ginger Ale

Preparation:
To make the fresh blueberry simple syrup, heat equal parts sugar, water and fresh blueberries. Boil for 10 minutes. Let cool.

Directions:
Using the side of a knife blade, smash ginger and add to shaker with at least two cubes of ice. Add the remaining ingredients and shake vigorously to extract flavor from the mint leaves and ginger. Strain into highball glass with ice and top with ginger ale. Garnish with mint leaf, blueberry and a ginger slice.
