Billy Ray Cyrus should not have tried to improve on a classic.
Take a dated chart-topping country-pop song. Add one ageing one-hit wonder who's nakedly desperate for relevance. Stir in a genre that neither Billy Ray Cyrus nor "Achy Breaky Heart" has business anywhere near. Add a dash of weird alien imagery, a sprinkle of techno, and a pinch of, for reasons beyond understanding, Larry King. Twerk well for 3 minutes and 33 seconds. Voila: a perfect bummer cake.
I watched Billy Ray Cyrus' new music video for "Achy Breaky 2," his hip-hop sequel to his 1991 hit "Achy Breaky Heart." I cannot in good conscience recommend you do the same.
It made me genuinely sad for those involved. The original "Achy Breaky Heart" was pretty bad; the new one is so awful I have to assume it's on purpose. It's an atonal mess that partners Billy's "Achy Breaky" chorus with rapper Buck 22. It features lyrics such as "Miley keeps twerkin/Daddy's song is workin'/Now Billy sing that crazy song again," as alien girls shake their butts in the background.
The only pleasure I get from this video's existence is the belief that it may be the only thing on the planet with the power to embarrass Miley Cyrus. She can twerk and strip and writhe and be a little racist with aplomb, but surely even she can't view her dad's desperate attempt to be cool without a shudder.
